Looking Back at the History of Cinemark Theatres

Cinemark Ticket Prices - Movie Theater Prices (1)

Cinemark first launched back in 1984 and was founded by Lee Roy Mitchell. Initially, the chain covered territoties in Texas, Utah, and California. Moving forward, the company was managed by the family and eventually started to acquire smaller, local theatre chains. In less than 10 years the theatre chain grew to cover most of the United States.

In 2006, Cinemark continued to grow, acquiring 80 new cinemas from Century Theatres with cash and stock bonds. Three years later in 2009, Cinemark purchased four theatres from Muvico Theaters in an attempt to save Muvico from bankruptcy.

2012 saw Cinemark grow once more when it started buying Rave theatres. These acquisitions were a pivotal point in Cinemark’s history as it was also the first time the company began acquiring high-quality IMAX screens. Unfortunately, some of these were lost in an attempt to cut costs and other theatres were sold to Carmike Cinemas.

Since 2013 and 2014 Cinemark has begun its new plans for expansion and renovation. Many of the older cinemas are being retrofitted with the latest Dolby Atmos surround system and an upgraded version of the aforementioned XD large screens so that they could now show standard 2D and Real-D 3D as well.

Cinemark met its first controversy in 1997 when they were charged by the Department of Justice for not following the Americans with Disabilities Act. This was caused by the new stadium-type seating arrangement which forced people on wheelchairs to sit at the very front of the theatre.

After a little back and forth, the case was settled and Cinemark agreed to renovate their theatres so that guests on wheelchairs could be seated in the higher rows.

Back in 2008, the company was also facing political controversy when the former CEO of Cinemark, Alan Stock, donated money towards the Proposition 8 movement that would prohibit same-sex marriage in the state of California. Many movie theatre patrons rebelled against this and began a counter-campaign in rivaling movie theatre chains.

This came to a drop when the US Supreme Court reinstated same-sex marriage and denounced Proposition 8 to be unconstitutional.

Terror struck the cinema chain in 2012 when a lone gunman open fired inside a Century Theater in Aurora, Colorado. 12 people were confirmed killed and 70 other patrons were injured. This has since been noted as the largest mass shooting in the history of the United States when both casualties and injuries are taken into account.

More recently in 2014, Cinemark was one of the major theatre chains to withdraw the movie The Intervie (2014)from cinemas. Cinemark was forced to do so due to the hack on Sony Pictures and terrorist threats to bomb any theatre showing the movie.

Movie-Going Innovations from Cinemark Theatres

Cinemark is known for being one of the very first theatre chains to utilize stadium-type seating. Back in the 1990s, this caused quite a mess and even lead to a court case led by the DOJ in regards to the poor seating opportunities for people on wheelchairs. As mentioned above, the case was settled shortly with Cinemark agreeing to change the arrangement so disabled people could sit in higher rows.

Cinemark is the only theatre to feature a unique screen design known as XD and most, if not all, of the existing Cinemark theatres, utilize this large screen concept.
