You can tailor it to your skill level by choosing an easy pattern for beginners and a more complex one for more advanced DIYers.

So today, I’m going to share exactly how to make string art, some free string art templates and patterns, and, lastly, some DIY string art kits to buy.

Let’s get started.

How to Make String Art

If you haven’t made string art before, here is what you’ll need:

Step 1: Find an image you’d like to use for your string art piece.

Images with straight lines (and less curves) work best, especially for beginners.

Print and cut out your image.

Step 2: Secure your image to your wood with tape.

CAREFULLY, tap your nails into your wood, following the outline of the image. You’ll want to tap your nails just outside your pattern.

Try to space your nails evenly, as well as nail them to approximately the same depth. Outline your shape completely.

Step 3: Remove the paper pattern.

Using your embroidery floss (use all six strands, do not separate), you will now outline the perimeter of your shape.

To do this, begin by tying your floss to your first nail and wrap your string around each nail as you make your way across your pattern.

Once you reach the end of your outline, tie your string to your original piece of floss at your first nail.

Step 4: Continue by filling in your shape with more embroidery floss.

You do this by criss crossing across your shape, wrapping each nail as you go. There is no “right” way to do this. Just continue up and down and zig zag across your pattern.

When you need or want to switch colors, simply tie off your string and tie a new piece onto a nail.

Clip the tails of your threads when you are done and that’s it!

Ok, let’s get to the free string art templates.

Remember, you can really use any image you like, you’ll just need to print it out and space your nails along the outline.

Most of these patterns have dots to help you place your nails.
